Bergen County Is Melting — And Everyone With a Pool Just Became Everyone’s Best Friend

North Jersey just lived through one of the most brutal heat stretches in years, with heat indices hitting 108 to 116 degrees and towns from Hackensack to East Rutherford throwing open cooling centers just to keep people safe. Millburn even opened its municipal pool to non-members, no questions asked, because when it’s 104 out, nobody cares about paperwork.

If there’s a silver lining to a heat dome, it’s this: New Jersey is quietly having a pool moment.

According to the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance’s latest industry survey, service and remodeling work are outpacing new builds nationwide, with more than half of pool service companies reporting revenue growth this year. Translation: it’s not just about digging a new hole in the backyard anymore. Homeowners across Bergen, Passaic, Morris, and Essex counties are upgrading what they’ve already got — smart heaters, energy-efficient pumps, spa add-ons — so their pool can actually keep up with a New Jersey summer that keeps getting hotter, longer, and stickier.

That matters here in a way it doesn’t everywhere else. North Jersey’s rocky soil and freeze-thaw winters are notoriously unforgiving on pool construction, and local permitting rules can trip up out-of-town contractors fast. It’s part of why homeowners are leaning harder on builders who know the towns, the inspectors, and the ground itself — not just the concrete.

Blu Sol Pools, a Northern New Jersey builder with more than 20 years and 500-plus projects under its belt, has been fielding a noticeable uptick in calls this summer — half from families finally pulling the trigger on a new pool, half from existing pool owners scrambling to retrofit before the next heat wave hits. “People aren’t just thinking about beating the heat this week,” says Blu Sol. “They’re thinking about the next ten Julys.”

With NWS forecasters calling this the most significant heat event New Jersey has seen in 2026, and climate data suggesting these stretches are becoming the norm rather than the exception, it’s a good moment to ask: is your backyard ready for the next one?

For local reporters covering the heat wave, real estate trends, or summer lifestyle stories, Blu Sol Pools is available to talk North Jersey-specific pool trends, costs, and what homeowners should know before they build or upgrade.
